Market leader MUL posted a healthy 24 per cent increase in sales during the month at 52,055 units as against 41,728 units in the same period last year.
Rival Hyundai Motor India had a marginal improvement at 16,115 units as against 16,067 units in the corresponding month a year ago. Homegrown major Tata Motors, however, recorded a decline of 3.56 per cent at 13,588 units as against 14,090 units.
General Motors India also continued to clock a healthy growth of 18.63 per cent at 3,017 units as against 2,543 units in the same month last year. The company's growth has been driven by its compact cars Chevrolet Spark and U-VA, which together clocked 2,975 units.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd,vehicle sales rose 30 percent in August to 18,269 units from 14,032 units a year earlier.
The Indian unit of Japan's Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (7267.TO) Monday said its August car sales fell 7% on year to 4,879 units, from 5,247 units a year earlier.
