First Search Engine to Provide Access to the Entire Internet From Any I-mode Phone
DEMO JAPAN 2001, Tokyo, Japan – February 27, 2001 – Google Inc. today announced the release of new wireless search technology specifically designed for users of NTT DoCoMo i-mode mobile phones. Larry Page, Google’s CEO and co-founder, debuted the new technology today at DEMO Japan 2001, an event hosted by IDG Japan that showcases the newest products and services that address the IT needs of the Japanese marketplace.
Available now at www.google.com/imode, Google’s i-mode search service is the first search engine that enables access to the entire World Wide Web from any i-mode mobile phone. Users can now search and browse more than 1.3 billion Internet web pages. When a wireless user requests a traditional HTML page, Google’s technology automatically quickly translates the requested HTML document into a format optimized for I-mode wireless phones.
"Google’s I-mode search technology is an important step in establishing Google as the leading search engine in Japan," said Larry Page, Google CEO and co-founder. "Japanese users now have anytime, anywhere access to the award-winning Google user experience. With 19 million users and growing, I-mode is well positioned to become a leading standard for accessing the mobile Internet, worldwide."
The award-winning Google search engine serves more than 70 million searches per day, with approximately half of these searches performed on the company’s home page at http://www.google.com. Google offers a wide variety of custom search service products and currently provides its search technology to more than 120 companies in 30 countries. Wireless carriers, software developers, and other OEMs may contact Google to discuss partnership opportunities by sending e-mail to imode@google.com.
